UN Denounces Taliban’s Restrictive “Enjoining Good and Forbidding Wrong” Law
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has warned that the Taliban’s new “Enjoining Good and Forbidding Wrong” law imposes irreparable restrictions on the rights of Afghan women and girls.
In a statement on August 25, 2024, Roza Otunbayeva, the head of UNAMA and the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative, said the law paints a distressing outlook for Afghanistan’s future. She added that even women’s voices outside the home are considered moral rebellion under this law, allowing Taliban morality police to threaten and detain individuals without justifiable charges.
Meanwhile, Michael McCaul, chair of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee, stated that due to President Joe Biden’s lack of commitment to supporting Afghan women, the Taliban has once again intensified its attacks against women.
Afghan women’s protest movements have also condemned the law and called on the international community to take action to save Afghan women. They emphasize that the world must remain steadfast in its stance of not recognizing the Taliban group.
