Taliban Plunders National Development Corporation Assets
Former journalist Bilal Sarwari has revealed on his X profile that the Taliban National Development Corporation (NDC) is facing a significant crisis. According to Sarwari, the Taliban group has illegally seized many of the NDC’s assets across Afghanistan. In response, the NDC has dispatched two teams to 19 provinces to assess, identify, and recover these misappropriated assets.
A letter sent to the Taliban’s Ministry of Interior, as reported by Sarwari, indicates that the NDC aims to return the confiscated assets to Kabul. This corporation, originally established by the former Afghan republic to implement projects of national importance, has fallen victim to widespread asset seizure by Taliban forces in various provinces.
The NDC’s efforts to recover its assets raise questions about the Taliban’s governance and respect for existing institutions. If the NDC is to demonstrate accountability, it should provide a comprehensive report on the number and value of assets recovered during this assessment.
This situation highlights the challenges faced by Afghan institutions under Taliban rule and the group’s approach to managing national resources. The outcome of this asset recovery mission could have significant implications for the NDC’s future operations and Afghanistan’s economic stability.
