Hazara Genocide in Afghanistan; The Call for Justice Rises
In recent days, the voice of protest against the genocide of Hazaras in Afghanistan has reached the ears of the world. On Sunday, September 15, a number of Afghan women’s movements and Afghan refugees in Pakistan, in a coordinated effort, called for serious attention from the United Nations and the international community to this vital issue.
In a joint statement, these groups described the attacks against Hazaras as “targeted and systematic” and called for an immediate investigation into these crimes. They emphasized that since the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan, the Hazara community has faced serious threats.
These requests come in the wake of a recent incident in the border area between Ghor and Daykundi provinces, where the ISIS group brutally murdered 14 Hazara Shia citizens. This shocking event has once again drawn attention to the dire situation of religious minorities in Afghanistan.
Human rights activists also called for the recognition of gender apartheid in Afghanistan and urged regional countries to prevent further infiltration of terrorist groups into the country.
While Human Rights Watch had previously warned that about 700 Hazaras have lost their lives in various attacks since the Taliban’s return to power, the international community has yet to take decisive action in this regard.
This cry for justice is a serious test for the international community to show whether it can remain silent in the face of this apparent genocide or will take urgent action to protect the lives of innocent people.
