US Strikes 15 Houthi Targets in Yemen, Escalating Regional Tensions
In a significant escalation of military action, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) conducted strikes on 15 Houthi targets in Yemen on Friday, October 4, 2024. The operation, which took place at approximately 5 p.m. Sanaa time, targeted various Houthi-controlled areas across the country.
The US military stated that these strikes were aimed at protecting freedom of navigation and enhancing safety in international waters. However, the Houthi-run Al Masirah television network reported that four provinces were hit, with four strikes in Sanaa and seven in the key port city of Hodeidah.
This military action comes in the wake of increasing tensions in the region. Just a day before the US strikes, the Houthis claimed to have launched a drone attack on Tel Aviv. The Israeli military responded by saying it had “intercepted a suspicious aerial target” off central Israel.
The situation has been further complicated by recent Houthi attacks on commercial vessels. On October 1, the group reportedly struck two ships off Yemen’s Red Sea port of Hodeidah, causing damage to both vessels.
These developments highlight the growing complexity of the conflict in Yemen and its potential to impact regional stability. As tensions continue to rise, the international community watches closely, concerned about the potential for further escalation in this strategically important area.
