Khalilzad: Trump’s Victory Opens Door for Full Doha Agreement Implementation
Following Donald Trump’s presidential election victory, Zalmay Khalilzad, former U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan, stated that the time has come for full implementation of the Doha Agreement. Khalilzad, who served during Trump’s first term, believes Trump’s return could facilitate the complete execution of the agreement’s provisions.
During his previous role, Khalilzad signed the Doha Agreement with the Taliban after months of negotiations in Qatar. This agreement led to the withdrawal of international forces from Afghanistan, resulting in the collapse of the previous Afghan government and the Taliban’s return to power.
Notably, Suhail Shaheen, head of the Taliban’s political office in Qatar, has expressed optimism about improved U.S.-Taliban relations under Trump’s presidency. The Taliban expects diplomatic recognition during Trump’s term, despite Khalilzad’s previous criticisms of their non-compliance with the Doha Agreement’s terms, particularly regarding intra-Afghan dialogue.
