Russia Withdraws Military Equipment from Syria as Regional Dynamics Shift
Recent satellite imagery captured by Maxar Technologies on December 13 shows Russia preparing to withdraw military equipment from the Hmeimim airbase in western Syria. A Russian cargo plane departed from the base to Libya in the early hours of December 14, marking the beginning of this significant movement.
According to a Syrian official monitoring the base, several more Russian cargo planes are expected to depart in the coming days as part of the evacuation process following the Assad regime’s collapse. This development signals a potential shift in Russia’s military presence in Syria.
Russia has maintained approximately 7,500 troops in Syria to support the Assad government, primarily stationed at two main bases: the naval facility in Tartus port and the Hmeimim airbase in Latakia. This withdrawal could mark a significant change in regional military dynamics.
