India’s Deputy Foreign Minister Meets Taliban Foreign Minister in Dubai
On Wednesday, January 8, 2025, Vikram Misri, India’s Deputy Foreign Minister, met with Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Foreign Minister of the Taliban, in Dubai. The two discussed regional developments and the expansion of humanitarian cooperation. Misri highlighted the historical friendship between the two countries and strong people-to-people ties, announcing India’s readiness to address the urgent developmental needs of the Afghan people.
This was the first meeting between a senior Indian official and the Taliban’s Foreign Minister. Both parties agreed that India, in addition to current humanitarian aid, would participate in future development projects in Afghanistan. India has already provided multiple shipments including 50,000 tons of wheat, 300 tons of medicine, 27 tons of earthquake relief, 100 million doses of polio vaccine, and other essential items to Afghanistan.
Upon the Taliban’s request, India will offer further assistance in the health sector and support for refugees. Misri and Muttaqi reached an agreement to strengthen sports cooperation, particularly in cricket, and to utilize the Chabahar port to support trade and humanitarian aid. The Indian Foreign Ministry stated that during the meeting, Muttaqi acknowledged India’s security concerns, and it was agreed that contacts and dialogues would continue at various levels.
