Following Ontario province’s 25% tariff on electricity exports to the US, President Donald Trump ordered an increase in tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum imports to 50%. This decision, effective from Wednesday, has escalated trade tensions between the two nations.

The Ontario government has stated that the electricity tariff will impact 1.5 million homes and businesses in Michigan, Minnesota, and New York states, generating up to $400,000 daily revenue for Canada. In response, Trump has threatened to significantly increase tariffs on car imports from Canada if Canadian tariffs are not removed.

Doug Ford, Ontario’s Premier, declared that he won’t back down until US tariffs are completely lifted. Meanwhile, Britain, a key US ally, has announced it won’t impose retaliatory tariffs in response to US steel and aluminum tariffs.
