Kaja Kallas, EU’s foreign policy chief, expressed disappointment over the US decision to cut funding for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL). She emphasized that the European Union cannot automatically step in to replace the United States in funding this media organization.

These statements came after Kerry Lack, senior advisor to the US Global Media Organization, officially announced the funding termination on March 15, 2025. According to this decision, RFE/RL has 30 days to submit an appeal for reconsideration.

Jan Lipavsky, Czech Republic’s Foreign Minister, announced that he would raise this issue at the EU foreign ministers’ meeting and seek solutions to maintain minimal operations of the media outlet. This decision follows Donald Trump’s executive order to reduce the activities of seven federal institutions.
