Houthi militants in Yemen have announced that their ceasefire agreement with the United States does not include Israel, indicating that attacks on global shipping that have disrupted world trade will not completely stop. Mohammed Abdulsalam, the Houthis’ chief negotiator, emphasized to Reuters on Wednesday, May 8: “This agreement does not include Israel under any circumstances.”
Donald Trump, President of the United States, announced on Tuesday that America would stop bombing the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen, saying the group had agreed to halt attacks on American ships. Abdulsalam added: “As long as they (the US) have announced that they are stopping their attacks and are committed to it, our attacks, which have been in self-defense, will also stop.”
The Houthis have been firing at Israel and shipping in the Red Sea since Israel began its military campaign against Hamas in Gaza following the deadly October 7, 2023 attack. The US military has reported bombing more than 1,000 targets since launching “Operation Rough Rider” on March 15. Ismail Baqaei, spokesman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, welcomed “the end of US aggression” against Yemen and thanked Oman for its mediation efforts.
