Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, has condemned the escalation of public punishments imposed by the Taliban regime.

On Monday, June 2, 2025, Bennett called for an immediate end to flogging punishments on his X (formerly Twitter) account, revealing that at least 63 men and 4 women were publicly flogged in the past week.

Bennett described these punishments as violations of international law and emphasized that such practices have significantly increased in 2025. He demanded an immediate halt to these inhumane punishments that violate human dignity and contravene international human rights standards.

On the same day that Bennett made his appeal, the Taliban Supreme Court announced that a resident of Badakhshan province had been sentenced to 39 lashes and two years in prison for selling alcoholic beverages,

demonstrating the continuing trend of harsh public punishments in the country.
