According to The Guardian newspaper, Afghan men are under pressure to force female family members to comply with Taliban’s moral policing rules.
Many men are acting as unpaid Taliban agents to prevent their women from being harassed. Amir, an Afghan father, says he now feels more like a prison guard than a loving parent and insists his daughters never leave home.
Javed Hakimi from Bamyan province describes the situation as “suffocating,” saying men are compelled to impose Taliban orders on female family members to preserve their honor and social standing. Parviz, a young man from northeastern Afghanistan, vented his anger on his mother and sister after his sister was detained for not wearing proper covering.
Young women have spoken about the pain of seeing family members transform into moral police. Fereshteh from Badakhshan says her husband beats her if she leaves home even to buy food. A 25-year-old woman described how her father’s behavior changed under Taliban rule, demanding that she and her sisters not wear makeup, stay home, and cover every strand of hair.
