Rosa Otunbayeva, head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), is scheduled to address the UN Security Council on Monday, June 23, regarding Afghanistan.

In this meeting, Otunbayeva will provide information about the next steps in the Doha Process, which began two years ago as a roadmap for more effective international engagement with the Taliban.

The meeting is expected to specifically focus on the impacts of the Taliban group’s stringent restrictions on Afghan women and girls.

Joyce Msuya, UN Deputy Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, and Sima Bahous, Executive Director of UN Women, will also speak at this meeting, discussing human rights, social, political, and economic challenges in Afghanistan.

Since returning to power nearly four years ago, the Taliban group has imposed severe restrictions on women, including closing schools above sixth grade and universities to girls and women, banning women from sports clubs, public baths, traveling without a male guardian, and working in many government offices. These actions have faced widespread international criticism.
