The European Union representation in Afghanistan has emphasized the fight against addiction on World Drug Day.

On Thursday, June 26, 2025, the union stated that it is working with its partners to reduce drug demand and provide sustainable livelihoods.

The European Union added that its $26 million support through the World Health Organization and other institutions demonstrates the union’s commitment to helping Afghans.

The EU clarified: “We are helping thousands of Afghans to combat addiction and mental disorders so they can become empowered and valuable assets to the country’s society and economy.”

The Taliban announced last year that three million people in Afghanistan are addicted to drugs, with women making up about 40 percent of this number.

This comes as Afghanistan faces extensive challenges in drug production and consumption.
