Tahir Mahmood Ashrafi, head of Pakistan’s Council of Religious Scholars, has made sharp statements calling the Taliban group their students and criticizing the “issuance of jihad fatwas in Pakistan”

Ashrafi says those unfamiliar with “Qul Huwallahu Ahad” are issuing fatwas, calling Pakistan’s system legitimate and Islamic.

He told the Taliban group that “your victories came as a result of our sacrifices.” Ashrafi sarcastically added that if they don’t know, they should ask their elders.

These statements come as relations between the two neighboring countries experience tensions.

Members of Afghanistan’s civil society network condemned Tahir Ashrafi’s recent statements on Monday These reactions demonstrate the depth of disagreements between scholars of both countries on various regional issues.
