Hamid Karzai, former President of Afghanistan, issued a message from Kabul commemorating the 14th anniversary of Burhanuddin Rabbani’s assassination, calling him a compassionate, peace-seeking leader who desired national unity.
Karzai respectfully remembered Rabbani as a religious scholar, jihadi leader, and former president of the Islamic state.
Despite Taliban leader’s demands for Karzai to refrain from publishing political statements, he continues releasing his political views. Previously on September 9th, he praised Ahmad Shah Massoud as a hero.
This time, he published a laudatory message about Rabbani, another leader who opposed the Taliban.
Burhanuddin Rabbani was targeted in a suicide attack in Kabul on September 20, 2011. An individual who introduced himself as a Taliban representative entered his home with a bomb hidden in his turban and detonated the explosives. Rabbani, who served as head of the High Peace Council, was martyred while attempting dialogue with the Taliban.
