Eight Republican senators have introduced a bill titled “Strengthening Enforcement of Visa Entry Restrictions and Controls” that would prevent sanctioned Iranian officials from entering the United States, even to attend UN General Assembly meetings.

The proposal was drafted by Senators Ted Cruz, Rick Scott, Tom Cotton, and others.

Senator Ted Cruz stated that individuals close to the Ayatollah who are under US sanctions pose a security threat and should not be allowed to enter America. This bill comes as the 80th UN General Assembly session is underway in New York.

Under Trump’s 2019 executive order, over 100 individuals and entities close to Iran’s leadership have been sanctioned.

A companion version of this legislation has also been introduced in the House of Representatives by Claudia Tenney, targeting what they call threats to American security.
