The Taliban group has flogged 16 people, including six women, in Kapisa and Khost provinces on charges of fleeing home and extramarital relations.

The group’s Supreme Court announced that 13 people in Kapisa each received 39 lashes.

Three others in Khost province were punished publicly on similar charges, with each sentenced to three months imprisonment and 30 lashes.

This comes as Richard Bennett, UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, previously warned that 672 people have been punished this year.

Despite widespread international condemnation and calls from organizations to end these punishments, the Taliban group continues implementing corporal punishments against citizens.
