Sources from Badakhshan report that residents of Darmakht village in Shughnan district have built a girls’ school using their personal funds.
The school, which cost 300,000 Afghanis and has five classrooms, was inaugurated yesterday (October 9th) with the presence of local Taliban education officials.
This initiative comes while the Taliban has banned girls from attending schools beyond sixth grade since regaining power.
A joint UNICEF and UNESCO report reveals that 90% of ten-year-old Afghan children cannot read simple text, and approximately 2.2 million teenage girls have been deprived of education.
According to the report, if restrictions continue, nearly four million Afghan girls will be deprived of secondary and higher education by 2030.
Learning poverty in Afghanistan has reached unprecedented levels, threatening an entire generation’s future due to Taliban’s restrictive policies and lack of investment in education.
