German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced he has invited Ahmad al-Sharaa, head of Syria’s transitional government, to Berlin to discuss the deportation process of Syrian citizens with criminal records.
On Monday, November 3rd, Merz told reporters that the German government has decided to begin the deportation process of Syrian criminal asylum seekers in a “practical manner.”
He added that Germany continues the process of returning criminals to Syria and this program is currently being implemented.
The German Chancellor also emphasized that alongside implementing this program, Germany intends to play a role in Syria’s stability and will consult with Ahmad al-Sharaa on this matter.
Ahmad al-Sharaa took power in Syria after Bashar al-Assad’s departure in December 2024 and is trying to restore his country’s relations with world powers that were severed during Assad’s era.
This invitation aims to facilitate cooperation between the two countries in resolving immigration issues and establishing diplomatic dialogue.
