Members of the “Afghanistan Women’s Historical Transformation Movement” burned burqas in their latest act of protest.

These women said they were “burning burqas for freedom” and emphasized that no power is greater than a woman’s will to live freely.
The women also stated that “a woman is neither a shadow nor hidden, but half the light of a land. A woman’s body is not a political battlefield, and freedom is women’s absolute right.”

This action, taking place in Afghanistan’s current restrictive environment, is a response to increasing pressures on women.

The Taliban group, after coming to power in August 2021, banned women from working in government offices, NGOs, and attending schools and universities. The group has also made wearing the burqa mandatory for women. This protest represents women’s continued resistance against systematic oppression in Afghanistan.
