Rev. Jesse Jackson, the longtime civil rights leader and former presidential candidate, has been hospitalized in Chicago, his family confirmed Wednesday.
The civil rights icon who gained worldwide acclaim for his work is currently under medical observation.
The Rainbow PUSH Coalition announced that Jackson is hospitalized and “under observation for Progressive Supranuclear Palsy”.
This neurodegenerative condition was diagnosed earlier this year.
Jackson, who twice ran for president in the 1980s, remains one of the most prominent figures in the civil rights movement.
Local sources report that he was hospitalized at Northwestern Hospital in Chicago due to a high pulse and breathing difficulties described as a “rattle in his chest”.
The Rainbow PUSH Coalition, the Chicago-based organization founded by Jackson, has not released detailed information about his current condition.
