United Nations experts announced on Tuesday, September 30, that more than 1,000 people have been executed in Iran during the first nine months of 2025, with at least 58 of them being Afghan citizens.
These experts, including Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, condemned this series of executions and stated that this action is a clear violation of international law.
The joint statement revealed that the recorded executions since January 1 include 57 Afghan men and one Afghan woman.
The experts emphasized that “the scale of executions in Iran is shocking and demonstrates a serious violation of the right to life.
In recent weeks alone, an average of 9 people have been executed daily”. It was reported that most individuals were executed on charges related to drug crimes and murder.
UN experts stressed that the widespread use of the death penalty for drug-related crimes is deeply concerning.
Iranian officials have not yet responded to this matter. These statistics show that the execution rate in Iran has increased dramatically, with Afghan citizens constituting a significant portion of the victims.
