Nasrollah Pejmanfar, representative of Mashhad in Iran’s parliament, has demanded water release from Afghanistan’s dams to supply drinking water for Mashhad.
Referring to the severe water shortage at Doosti Dam, he said correspondence has been made with Iran’s First Vice President to pursue the release of at least 200 million cubic meters of water from upstream Harirud dams.
Pejmanfar announced that Doosti Dam reserves, the main supplier of Mashhad’s drinking water, currently stand at only 34 million cubic meters, less than three percent of its capacity.
He added that rainfall in the 2024-2025 water year was only 152 millimeters, showing a 38 percent decrease compared to the long-term statistical period.
The parliamentarian warned that under current conditions, Doosti Dam will reach an unusable level by December 2025, and Mashhad will face severe drinking water shortages even during winter.
He also requested allocation of 45 trillion rials for emergency water supply projects.
