Local sources in Balkh province report that Taliban intelligence agents arrested Seyed Sekandar Hosseini Bamdad, a prominent Afghan poet and cultural activist, about a week ago. He was allegedly detained in Mazar-e-Sharif on charges of engaging in literary and linguistic activities “outside the Taliban’s regulations,” and no information is available about his fate as of now.

Bamdad’s family and friends have made several attempts to contact him but have not been successful. His colleagues confirmed he was arrested by Taliban intelligence while commuting home last week.

Seyed Sekandar Hosseini Bamdad was responsible for the “Khana Molana” and “Ferdowsi Library” in Balkh, playing a key role in promoting Persian-Dari literature. The continued detention and suppression of cultural activists by the Taliban in December has raised serious concerns among the Afghan cultural community.
