On December 3, International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) called for greater respect for the rights of people with disabilities. According to UNAMA, one-quarter of Afghans live with disabilities—40% experience moderate disabilities and nearly 14% face severe forms.

The agency stressed that persons with disabilities should not be treated as a secondary issue. UNAMA demanded their full integration into all planning and decision-making, noting that they are vital contributors to Afghanistan’s social and economic development.

UNAMA highlighted that decades of war, drought, and weak health systems have increased disability rates. The organization reaffirmed its commitment to its new inclusion strategy, ensuring that people with disabilities are central to every program and activity in Afghanistan.
