Russia Flexes Naval Might in Global “Ocean 2024” Drills
Russia has launched its largest naval exercise since the Soviet era, dubbed “Ocean 2024,” showcasing its maritime prowess on a global scale. The massive drills, which began on Thursday, September 12, 2024, will continue until September 16, spanning multiple oceans and seas.
President Vladimir Putin announced that the exercises will take place in the Pacific and Arctic Oceans, as well as the Mediterranean, Caspian, and Baltic Seas. The Russian Defense Ministry stated that the maneuvers involve over 400 ships and vessels, more than 120 aircraft, and approximately 90,000 troops.
China is officially participating in the drills, although its contribution is minimal. The two nations have been strengthening their military ties, with China set to hold its own exercises later this month, in which Russia will take part.
These joint naval activities have raised concerns among Western nations, particularly the United States. Putin warned the U.S. against attempting to outgun Moscow in Asia, framing the exercise as a counter to American influence in the Pacific region.
As tensions continue to simmer between Russia and the West, these extensive naval drills serve as a clear message of Russia’s military capabilities and its strategic partnerships, particularly with China.
