The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), in a statement marking International Human Rights Day, warned that Afghan women and girls continue to face severe restrictions in health, employment, and social participation.

UNAMA stressed that these conditions undermine the fundamental rights of women and the future of Afghanistan, making families more vulnerable.

The statement highlighted that the forced return of many Afghans, especially women, former government affiliates, and civil society activists, exposes them to risks of retaliation.

UNAMA called on the Taliban group to align with global human rights obligations and create a better environment for Afghan society to flourish.

Georgette Gagnon, UNAMA’s acting head, emphasized that human rights are not optional but a daily necessity for survival.

She urged the Taliban to lift restrictions on women and girls and ensure their full participation in society.
