The Taliban’s Department of Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice in Nangarhar province announced that 657 musical instruments were collected from residents and burned in the presence of local officials.

This action, aimed at “protecting public morals,” was carried out with representatives from the provincial administration, police, intelligence, and judiciary.
Since returning to power, the Taliban group has imposed widespread restrictions on individual and cultural freedoms, with music being one of the most heavily suppressed areas.

Human rights activists say the Taliban are imposing their strict personal beliefs on society, making daily life more difficult for many Afghans.
Last year, the Taliban’s Ministry of Promotion of Virtue stated that over 21,000 musical instruments had been destroyed across Afghanistan.
