Police in the Turkish cities of Van and Sakarya have detained 13 Afghan refugees as part of an intensified crackdown on undocumented migration. Seven individuals were discovered hiding in a truck in Van, while six others were arrested in Sakarya for lacking legal documentation. Authorities confirmed that the detainees have been transferred to deportation centers following administrative processing.
The Turkish Migration Authority reported that over 42,000 Afghan nationals were detained in the past year alone, placing Afghans at the top of the list of intercepted refugees. Officials emphasized that operations to identify and apprehend undocumented migrants are ongoing across all Turkish cities.
As a primary transit route to Europe, Turkey faces significant pressure from the EU to curb illegal migration. Consequently, police operations have become a daily occurrence, with many Afghan refugees being detained and deported back to Afghanistan regularly. Three individuals were also arrested for allegedly facilitating the illegal transport of these refugees.
