John Aylieff, head of the World Food Programme in Afghanistan, has issued a stark warning about the malnutrition crisis, revealing that families are selling their daughters into early marriage just to afford food.
He highlighted the devastating impact on women and girls, which he claims has been largely ignored by the international community.
Statistics predict that in the next 12 months, five million women and children will suffer from malnutrition, with nearly four million children requiring immediate treatment.
A drastic cut in US funding has reduced access to humanitarian aid by two-thirds, forcing clinics to close down.
Describing the situation as “shocking,” Aylieff warned that without treatment, malnourished children will die.
He noted that in areas where aid has ceased, children are being pulled out of school and sent to work, painting a grim picture of the country’s future .
