Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has suggested that the United Kingdom should stop calling itself “Great Britain.” Speaking in Moscow, Lavrov remarked that the UK is the only country officially styling itself as “Great,” comparing it to Gaddafi’s former “Great Socialist People’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya.”
He stated he hoped his comments wouldn’t be seen as offensive but insisted the name no longer fits. These remarks come amidst heightened tensions, with Russian officials recently labeling the UK as their “number one enemy” due to its support for Ukraine.
While the US seeks to navigate relations under a new administration, the rift between London and Moscow continues to widen. The UK remains a staunch supporter of Ukraine, viewing Russia as a critical threat to European security.
