Iranian state media has reported that Mojtaba Khamenei, the second son of Ali Khamenei, has been appointed as the country's new Supreme Leader. This follows the death of his father during recent military strikes.

Ali Khamenei was killed on February 28 during the initial wave of US and Israeli attacks, prompting the Assembly of Experts to quickly select Mojtaba. Reports indicate Mojtaba's mother and sister also perished in the strikes.

The selection of the 56-year-old, who has never held elected office, has sparked widespread concerns about hereditary rule in Iran. He is known to have deep, influential ties with the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
