The US Intelligence Community stated in its annual report that Al-Qaeda and ISIS are the biggest threats to US interests. These groups exploit political instability by operating in parts of Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia. Al-Qaeda likely has between 15,000 and 28,000 members, while ISIS has between 12,000 and 18,000.
The report indicates that the growth of these groups over the past five years has mainly occurred in Africa. Al-Qaeda in Yemen, ISIS Khorasan branch in South Asia, and ISIS in Syria are the most likely groups to plan external attacks. The report also references the Taliban government's actions against ISIS and tensions between the Taliban and Pakistan.
