Radio Mashaal, which broadcasted to southern Afghanistan and across the Durand Line, has officially ceased operations after sixteen years. The closure was attributed to severe financial difficulties and the sudden termination of the station's primary funding.

Operating as the Pashto branch of Radio Free Europe, the station has completely shut down its radio and digital platforms. This unfortunate closure comes at a time when domestic media in Afghanistan faces extreme censorship.

Journalist protection organizations strongly criticize the unprecedented restrictions imposed by the Taliban government. With the shutdown of such independent outlets, citizens' access to free, unbiased news and reliable information is significantly diminishing.
