Iratxe García, the leader of the Socialists in the European Parliament, strongly criticized the invitation of Taliban officials to a meeting in Brussels. The gathering is scheduled to discuss the deportation of Afghan migrants. She firmly stated that ordinary Afghan citizens should not pay the price for the group's actions.
Highlighting the dire situation of women and girls in Afghanistan, García argued that Europe must not become a deportation machine that negotiates with oppressors. She added that inviting a group that deprives women of education and imprisons them at home is a direct betrayal of core European values.
Left-wing parties and human rights organizations have also warned that this move could imply an indirect recognition of the government. However, the European Commission confirmed the technical meeting is being held at the request of member states to coordinate migrant returns.
