Mahmood Khan Achakzai, leader of the Awami National Party in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, has declared that all Pashtuns living in the country should obtain Afghan identity cards. He urged them to openly display their Afghan identity.
The opposition leader in Pakistan's National Assembly argued that just like millions of Pakistani citizens who hold dual citizenship in Western countries, Pashtuns have the right to hold an Afghan ID. He also claimed the border fencing was ordered by America.
So far, neither the Taliban government officials nor the Pakistani state have officially reacted to these controversial remarks. However, it remains unclear whether the massive population of Pashtuns in Pakistan actually desires to acquire Afghan citizenship documents.
