Belgium has officially initiated security screenings for a delegation from the Taliban government ahead of crucial migration talks with the European Union. The Afghan delegation is expected to travel to Brussels to discuss the potential return of asylum seekers.
The European Commission forwarded the delegation's names to the Belgian government to facilitate the visa process. However, issuing visas to these officials has sparked significant political sensitivity, given that the international community still does not formally recognize the Taliban government.
Despite fierce criticism from human rights organizations and European Parliament members, EU officials argue that dialogue is absolutely necessary to manage the ongoing migration crisis. The Afghan delegation has not yet submitted a formal visa application.
