Today marks the fifty third anniversary of Mohammad Daoud Khan's coup on July 17, 1973, which ended decades of monarchy in Afghanistan. This historic event established the country's first republic system and permanently altered its political trajectory.

Supported by the army, Daoud Khan launched his government with promises of economic development and social reforms. Despite his initial efforts to modernize the nation, his shifting domestic and foreign policies soon sparked internal opposition and regional tensions.

Ultimately, his republic was overthrown in another coup on April 27, 1978, resulting in his tragic death alongside his family. More than half a century later, Afghanistan remains under the Taliban government, continuing to face profound political challenges.
