Nafisa, a fifty-year-old Afghan woman, is severely struggling with immense economic hardship after her beloved son died migrating to Iran. Exactly one year ago, her son traveled to the neighboring country desperately hoping to find work and repay mounting family debts.
Now, this elderly mother bears the incredibly heavy responsibility of caring for her three orphaned grandchildren and widowed daughter-in-law without any income. Extreme poverty and widespread unemployment have tragically caused many young Afghans to lose their lives on dangerous migration routes.
Similar heartbreaking narratives exist across various regions of the country where vulnerable families have completely lost their primary breadwinners. Recent strict border controls and deadly shootings have infinitely increased the fatal risks of these completely illegal and desperate journeys.
