As the fifth anniversary of the Taliban's return to power approaches, over 50 prominent international legal and human rights experts have signed a declaration calling for gender apartheid to be recognized as a crime under international law. The declaration, set to be unveiled on August 13, is the result of 18 months of consultations between international lawyers and Afghan women's rights defenders.
Signatories include Nobel Prize laureates, former international court judges, former UN officials, and human rights activists from Afghanistan and South Africa. They are urging the international community to explicitly include a prohibition on gender apartheid in the Convention on Crimes Against Humanity.
The signatories state that the Taliban have created a system of gender-based discrimination by barring girls from education and restricting women from work and public life. The launch ceremony will be held virtually on August 13, hosted by the University of Michigan Law School.
