The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has warned that a sharp rise in fertilizer prices following the 2026 Middle East crisis could seriously jeopardize Afghanistan's wheat harvest in 2027.
FAO says it needs $38.3 million to supply fertilizer and improved wheat seeds to around 600,000 farming families before the winter planting season begins. The agency noted that due to Afghanistan's low soil fertility, wheat production is heavily dependent on fertilizers such as diammonium phosphate and urea.
Wheat is Afghanistan's most vital crop, and any decline in production could threaten the food security of millions. Kazakhstan, a key wheat supplier, recently announced that its grain exports to Afghanistan rose 57% over the past 11 months, reaching 2.4 million tons.
