UN Special Rapporteur for Afghanistan Richard Bennett on Friday called for the immediate release of six staff members of a women's and children's rights research organization detained in Kabul. He noted that after three weeks in detention, no formal charges have been brought against them in court.
Taliban forces raided the organization's office in late June and arrested the six employees. Founder Zarqa Yaftali confirmed that Taliban intelligence agents took her colleagues, including two of her family members.
The organization, registered in Kabul in 2003, worked on research, advocacy, and education related to women's and children's rights. Since the Taliban's return to power, civil society organizations — especially those defending women's rights — have faced severe restrictions and many have been forced to suspend operations.
