A 25-year-old woman in the Ayno Mena district of Kandahar province died by suicide on Friday morning, August 8, after being forcibly engaged to a middle-aged man. Taliban officials in Kandahar confirmed the incident and said they are investigating.
Taliban authorities also claimed they prevented another young woman in Kandahar's Zhari district from taking her own life. According to them, her brother had been attempting to force her into marriage with an elderly man.
Since the Taliban's return to power, multiple cases of young women dying by suicide in protest against forced marriages have been reported. The issue has drawn significant attention from media outlets and women's rights advocates internationally.
