Afghanistan's Taliban Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs declared August 19 a public holiday marking the 107th anniversary of Afghan independence. Previously, August 15 was also declared a holiday celebrating what the Taliban call "victory over American occupation," with ceremonies held across the country.

107 years ago, King Amanullah Khan secured Afghanistan's independence from British colonial rule. The Taliban has consistently celebrated this anniversary without acknowledging Amanullah Khan's role and legacy.

In past years, Taliban authorities arrested young people in various provinces for raising the national flag or sharing it on social media. This contradictory approach to the independence anniversary continues to draw criticism.
