Khatra wakes up every day to the same question from her children: "Mom, when is Dad coming back?" Her husband Masoud was evacuated to the United States five years ago, but Khatra and their three children were left behind in Balkh province.
After Donald Trump returned to power, the US refugee admissions program was suspended. US immigration authorities also halted processing of all Afghan cases, and Afghanistan was placed on the banned entry list.
Khatra's story is not unique — she is one of thousands of Afghan women who have spent years waiting to reunite with their families, with nothing able to fill the void left by absent husbands and fathers.
