Ayesha Wahab, an Afghan-American California state legislator, made history by winning the special election for California's 14th Congressional District, becoming the first Afghan-American woman elected to the U.S. Congress.
She defeated Melissa Hernandez and will replace Democrat Eric Swalwell, who resigned in April amid sexual misconduct allegations he denies. With this victory, Democrats hold 213 seats and Republicans 218 in the House.
The 39-year-old, born in New York to Afghan immigrant parents, had previously been the first Muslim woman and first Afghan-American elected to the California state legislature. With 95% of votes counted, Wahab secured over 53% of the vote.
