The Taliban's disaster management authority announced on Sunday that a 500-kilogram Russian-made bomb was discovered in Firoz Nakhchir district of Samangan province and safely destroyed after being moved to a secure location. The bomb was found after a local resident reported a suspicious object.

The technical team of the demining organization "DAFA" transported and neutralized the OFAB-500 ShR bomb — an unguided aerial bomb equipped with a parachute to slow its descent, designed for low-altitude tactical use with high-explosive and fragmentation effects.

Landmines and unexploded ordnance from decades of war continue to threaten civilian lives in Afghanistan. The UN has warned that around 50 people are killed monthly by mine explosions in Afghanistan, with 80 percent of victims being children.
