Naveedullah Fetrat, a well-known teacher and critic of the Taliban government, was arrested by Taliban forces on Wednesday morning, August 26, 2026, near Cinema Square in the city of Herat.
Days earlier, Fetrat posted a video on Facebook accusing the Taliban of using religion as a cover for ethnic goals and demanding they separate religion from politics. He ended the video saying, "This may be my last video, but I will speak the truth before I die."
Sources say the Taliban also arrested a family for hosting Fetrat. Taliban officials have not commented on the reasons for the arrest.
