Media outlets affiliated with the Taliban government have reported that ten miners are trapped underground following the collapse of a gold mine in Takhar province. The incident occurred in the "Samti" area of the Chah-e Ab district, and rescue efforts are underway.
The Bakhtar News Agency, which operates under Taliban control, reported on Wednesday evening, September 30th, that the governor, police chief, and other local Taliban officials in Takhar have gone to the scene to address the incident. According to initial reports, the ten miners were trapped when a section of the mine collapsed while they were working deep underground.
Meanwhile, Hurriyat media, which is also close to the Taliban, has provided more details. According to Hurriyat, the incident happened on Wednesday afternoon, and the miners trapped under the rubble are still alive. This news has raised hopes for their successful rescue.
Non-standard and unprofessional mining is a serious problem in Afghanistan. Many mines, especially in remote areas, are extracted by local people using primitive and dangerous tools and methods, which always carries the risk of accidents such as collapses, explosions, and gas poisoning.
In past years, dozens of miners have lost their lives in similar incidents in various provinces, including Badakhshan, Samangan, and Takhar. The lack of government oversight, poverty, and the absence of alternative job opportunities are reasons that compel people to engage in high-risk work in the mines.
Local rescue teams with limited resources are trying to reach the trapped miners. The condition of the miners and the outcome of the rescue operation are not yet precisely known, and everyone is awaiting further news from the Chah-e Ab district.
